Hong Kong Snapshot (27) (With Video) – The “Monster building” in the film “Transformer 4”

As the most famous “Concrete Jungle” in the world, the tower-studded cityscape always amazes the tourists. Many tourists even come HK just to feel the oppression from the skyscrapers.

Among the skyscrapers, there is one that are not known until the film “Transformer 4” took a scene her. The building became the representative of HK’s skyscrapers and one of the most famous topic of photographers. Later, “Ghost in the shell” take their scene here. And even famous traveling website “Lonely Planet” use the photos of the buildings as the profile picture of the HK page. This, is called the “Monster Building”.

Quarry Bay, a district that only Hong Kong people know. In Quarry Bay, there are 5 mansions sticking together. Because of the huge size of the 5 mansions, residents call them the “Huge Buildings”. But it is better know as the “Monster Building” because it is just like a monster sleeping in Quarry Bay.

”Monster Building” was built in 1970s. The representative of the 5 buildings is Montane Mansion so we usually call them “Montane Mansion”. The style of the buildings was common in the 1970s but now there are only few left in HK. The upper floors are the residential and the ground floor is shops, forming a independent community. There are over 10000 people living here.

As there is no security of the buildings, we can go inside easily. Going into the “Monster Building”, the most impressive is not the famous photo, but the old HK style. We can see neighborhood starring outside the restaurant chatting. Together with the old architecture style, we seem like going into the mood of the old HK films. There are many old shops that we may be able to see again: dry seafood, Chinese herb, hardware and Chinese tea. But I came at night and most shops were closed.

There is a courtyard at the middle of the buildings. When we look up, we may see all windows, air conditioners, and drying clothes. The terrace, some are convex, some are concave, and looks messy just like the back of a monster. But there seem to be some orders, give us a feeling of strange but fusion. It is a strong visual impact. When we look to the sky between the buildings. We feel like sitting in a well. We are seeing “hope” from pressure, or “depressing” from the sky far far away?

It is the best picture of HK, crowded, pressure, forcing every HK people. But actually, when we look up, we can see the sky. When we try to forget the pressure around us and look up, the sky will bring us hope. But, how many people under pressure can try to do it. Just like the residents of the “Monster Building”, how ofter will them look up to the sky? But the myriad twinkle lights form the “Monster Building” is reminding us that the hard work and power of HK people is still here. The lights cover the dark sky, bring me a kind of romance.

Today, the “Monster Building” is already a famous place in the world. Nearly all articles and videos about HK mention the “Monster Buildings”. When you come at daytime, the blue sky and the dark building bring us a strong comparison. If we tune the picture the black and white, we see another feeling, the felling of depression. Every feel is talking a story, a story of HK.
